JEN DENIKE

Born in 1971, lives and works in New York.

Jen DeNike’s work harmonizes video, photography, sculpture and performance. A former student of Stephen Shore, DeNike’s photography and choreography seek to explore elements of ritual and the occult in her physical surroundings. Most of DeNike’s video work and photography feature the human figure engaged in physical action with their environment—nude women treading mysterious waterscapes, two teenage boys grunting and sweating as they wrestle on a grassy field, others are skipping stones on the surface of ponds and streams. The choreography of her performances presents a mysterious phenomena of forms, sites and artifacts that explore elements of the paranormal within gender and sexuality. Operating in the gray area between created and captured, DeNike’s eloquent formal language as a photographer and choreographer weaves her construction of narrative into a delicate personal experience.
